 Dr. Faustus and Faust are two prominent literary characters that have stood the test of time. Both characters were created by two renowned writers of the medieval era, Marlowe and Goethe, respectively. Though both Dr. Faustus and Faust share some similarities, they differ in several ways as well. In the following paragraphs, we will compare and analyze Dr. Faustus and Faust to understand the similarities and differences between these two literary characters.

Dr. Faustus and Faust are both men who crave knowledge and power beyond what is considered normal. They both seek knowledge that promises to render them extraordinary power. In Dr. Faustus, the protagonist, Dr. Faustus, an accomplished scholar, desires to obtain knowledge beyond his earthly knowledge, which he believes will give him supernatural abilities. Similarly, in Goethe's Faust, the protagonist, Faust, is a man seeking knowledge beyond his present reality.

In their quest for knowledge, both characters encounter supernatural beings. Dr. Faustus, through the help of Mephistopheles, obtains his desired knowledge. Faust, on the other hand, comes across the devil, who gives him the knowledge he seeks. However, despite attaining the knowledge they desire, both characters' lives take a different turn.

Dr. Faustus and Faust end up using their knowledge to engage in activities that are considered immoral. Dr. Faustus, for instance, uses his powers to deceive and manipulate those around him. Faust, on the other hand, develops an unhealthy addiction to sex. These immoral acts only lead to their eventual downfall, and they both spend their last moments in despair.

However, the ending of both stories is entirely different. In Marlowe's Dr. Faustus, the protagonist ends up being dragged into hell by the demons he had made a deal with. In Goethe's Faust, the protagonist repents of his sins and is ultimately saved from hell. This point underscores the disparity between the literary works.

In conclusion, Dr. Faustus and Faust are literary characters that have become prominent figures due to their desire for knowledge beyond their human limits. Both characters use their knowledge to engage in activities that are considered immoral, leading to their eventual downfall. While there is a similarity in the first part of the story, the ultimate ending of Dr. Faustus and Faust differ significantly.
